Generali Okapi Aalstar Hand Kangoeroes Mechelen a 94-79 Home Defeat in BNXT League

Generali Okapi Aalstar produced one of the most complete road performances of their BNXT League campaign on Sunday, defeating Kangoeroes Mechelen 94-79 at the Winketkaai. The visitors controlled the tempo from the opening tip, punished Mechelen's cold shooting from deep, and never allowed the home side to build a sustained run after the first quarter.

The result lifts Aalstar into a more comfortable position in the BNXT League standings and hands Mechelen a second straight home loss — a concerning trend for a team with playoff ambitions.

Match Overview

Aalstar set the tone early with aggressive pick-and-roll coverage and quick transition attacks. They led 24-18 after ten minutes, extended the advantage to 48-38 at halftime, and effectively put the game out of reach with a 22-11 third-quarter surge. Mechelen trimmed the deficit to nine early in the fourth, but Aalstar answered with an 8-0 run to restore control.

Shooting told much of the story: Aalstar connected on 12-of-28 from three-point range (42.9%), while Mechelen managed just 7-of-25 (28.0%). The visitors also won the rebounding battle 38-31 and converted 16 Mechelen turnovers into 21 points.

Key Moments

• First quarter: Aalstar guard Jalen Stevens hit back-to-back triples to cap a 10-2 run and set the early tone.
• Second quarter: Mechelen cut the lead to four, but Aalstar closed the half on a 12-4 burst, capped by a Stevens step-back three at the buzzer.
• Third quarter: A 22-11 Aalstar run, fueled by six offensive rebounds, turned a ten-point game into a 21-point blowout.
• Fourth quarter: Mechelen's Luka Kotnik scored eight straight to make it 78-69, but Aalstar's response was immediate and decisive.

Tactical Breakdown

Aalstar's defensive game plan was clear: force Mechelen's guards to shoot contested threes and keep the ball out of the paint. The approach worked. Mechelen shot just 38.5% from two-point range in the second half and rarely generated clean looks at the rim. Offensively, Aalstar used high ball screens to create mismatches and consistently found open shooters in the corners.

Mechelen's coaching staff tried a zone defense in the third quarter, but Aalstar's ball movement shredded it — the visitors assisted on 24 of their 34 made field goals.

Standout Players

• Jalen Stevens (Aalstar): 26 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 5-of-9 from three.
• Dorian Marchant (Aalstar): 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks.
• Luka Kotnik (Mechelen): 21 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists.
• Vince Van Cleemput (Mechelen): 14 points, 8 rebounds, but 4 turnovers.

BNXT League Standings Impact

The win improves Aalstar's record and strengthens their case for a top-four seed in the BNXT League playoff race. Mechelen, meanwhile, remains in the middle of a crowded group fighting for home-court advantage in the first round. With the season still young, both teams will look at this game as a measuring stick: Aalstar for how high their ceiling can be, Mechelen for how urgently they need to fix their perimeter defense.

Next up, Mechelen travel to face a direct rival in the standings, while Aalstar return home hoping to build on a statement road win.
