Belfius Mons produced a ruthless road performance to defeat Basket Team Waregem 92-76 in the Belgium Basketball Cup, sealing the tie with a dominant first half and a professional closing stretch that never let the home side back into contention.

Match Overview

From the opening tip, the difference in level was apparent. Mons moved the ball quickly, attacked the rim with purpose and shot the ball with confidence, while Waregem struggled to find clean looks against a well-organised defensive scheme. By the end of the first quarter the visitors had established a double-digit advantage, and they managed the game expertly from that point onward.

• Q2: Basket Team Waregem 20-22 Belfius Mons
• Q3: Basket Team Waregem 18-23 Belfius Mons
• Q4: Basket Team Waregem 19-22 Belfius Mons
• Final: Basket Team Waregem 76-92 Belfius Mons

Key Moments

The first quarter set the template. Mons opened with a 9-2 run, capped by a transition dunk that silenced the home crowd, and pushed the lead to thirteen before Waregem steadied with a late flurry. Every time the hosts threatened to build momentum, the visitors answered with a composed offensive possession or a defensive stop.

Waregem's best spell came midway through the third quarter, when three consecutive three-pointers trimmed the deficit to nine and briefly raised hopes of a comeback. Mons immediately called a timeout, switched to a tighter man-to-man defence and closed the period with an 8-0 run that restored a comfortable margin.

Tactical Story

Mons controlled the game on both ends with a simple but effective approach: defend aggressively, rebound collectively and attack before the defence could set. Their transition game was the standout feature of the night, generating easy baskets and forcing Waregem into foul trouble as they tried to stop the break.

In the half court, Mons used ball screens to create mismatches and consistently found the open man, finishing with a balanced scoring spread that made them difficult to defend. Waregem, by contrast, relied heavily on individual shot creation, and when those shots stopped falling the offence stalled.

Standout Performers

Mons' guard play was excellent throughout, combining pace and control while hitting key shots in every quarter. Their interior players dominated the boards at both ends and protected the rim, denying Waregem the easy second-chance points that could have kept the game close.

Waregem's effort deserved better than the scoreline. Their shooting guard delivered a strong individual performance, and their bench brought energy in the second half. But the team's turnover count and struggles on the defensive glass proved decisive against a well-drilled opponent.

Cup Context and Season Outlook

The Belgium Basketball Cup is a competition where momentum and squad depth matter, and Mons showed both. Advancing comfortably away from home is a good sign for their form and confidence, and it keeps their cup ambitions firmly on track.

For Basket Team Waregem, the result is a learning experience rather than a disaster. Cup ties against stronger opposition offer a benchmark, and their second-half resilience suggests there is enough quality in the roster to compete well in their own league campaign.
