The Sendai 89ers protected their home court on Wednesday evening, defeating Altiri Chiba 81-74 at the Xebio Arena Sendai. A composed second-half performance, anchored by efficient half-court offence and a stingy defensive effort down the stretch, gave the 89ers a hard-earned B1 League victory over a Chiba side that pushed them all the way.

Match Overview

Both teams entered the contest looking to establish tempo, and the first quarter reflected that battle. Sendai's 21-17 opening period gave them a lead they would hold for much of the night, though Altiri Chiba repeatedly clawed their way back into contention with timely three-point shooting and aggressive drives to the rim.

How the Game Was Won

Sendai led by four after the first quarter and by three at halftime, with the game's rhythm dictated by their ability to generate high-quality shots inside the arc. The third quarter proved decisive: a 22-18 period, powered by a 9-0 run midway through, pushed the 89ers' lead to its largest margin of the night and gave them the cushion they needed for the final stretch.

Chiba refused to fold. A determined fourth-quarter effort brought them within four points with under three minutes to play, but Sendai answered with a pair of clutch baskets and converted their free throws late to keep the visitors at arm's length. In a game decided by margins, the 89ers' 22-18 third quarter was the difference-maker.

Key Moments

• Q1: Sendai's 21-17 start set the tone in front of a lively home crowd.
• Mid-Q3: A 9-0 run gave the 89ers their biggest lead of the game and forced an Altiri Chiba timeout.
• Late Q4: Chiba cut the deficit to four, but Sendai's composed execution in the final two minutes sealed the result.

Tactical Story

Sendai's offensive approach was methodical. Rather than settling for early three-pointers, they worked the ball inside-out, attacking the paint to draw help defenders before kicking out to shooters. That balance kept Altiri Chiba's defence guessing and produced a steady stream of efficient possessions.

Defensively, the 89ers made a clear decision to limit Chiba's transition game. By prioritising matching up early and controlling the defensive glass, they forced the visitors into a slower, half-court battle — a style that suited Sendai's more physical frontcourt. Chiba's guards still found ways to score, but the extra effort required in every possession gradually took its toll in the fourth quarter.

Standout Performers

Sendai's frontcourt anchored the win, controlling the rebounding battle and finishing efficiently around the rim. Their guards did an excellent job managing the game, particularly in the closing minutes when the pressure was highest, making smart decisions and avoiding the turnovers that can swing a tight contest.

For Altiri Chiba, the performance offered plenty of positives. Their perimeter shooting kept them within striking distance throughout, and their defensive intensity forced Sendai into several difficult possessions. What they lacked was a consistent interior presence to balance the offence when the jump shots stopped falling.

What It Means for the B1 League Table

Defending home court is essential in the B1 League, and this win gives Sendai 89ers valuable momentum as they look to climb the standings and establish themselves as a genuine playoff contender. For Altiri Chiba, the defeat is a narrow one against a direct rival — the kind of result that can sting in the final reckoning of a long season. Both teams will take encouragement from their defensive efforts, but Sendai leave with the more valuable currency: a win.
