The Vienna derby in the Austria Basketball Zweite Liga ended in emphatic fashion as Vienna Timberwolves dismantled city rivals Vienna United 85-58. The visitors controlled the game from the second quarter onwards, turning a tight opening into a one-sided affair.

Match Overview

The first quarter was competitive, with both sides trading baskets and neither able to establish a significant advantage. United's early energy and willingness to attack the rim kept them within touching distance, but the Timberwolves gradually imposed their defensive will. A decisive run late in the first half broke the game open, and United never recovered.

The second half was one-way traffic. The Timberwolves extended their lead steadily, rotating their bench without losing any defensive intensity, while United's offence became increasingly disjointed. The final margin of 27 points accurately reflected the difference between the two teams on the night.

Key Moments

• Late first quarter: The Timberwolves closed the period with a 10-0 run to take a lead they never surrendered.
• Second quarter: A three-point barrage stretched the advantage beyond 20 points before halftime.
• Third quarter: United's best chance to respond came early in the third, but two missed open threes were punished at the other end.

Tactical Story

Defence was the foundation of the Timberwolves' victory. Their switching scheme disrupted United's ball-screen actions, and their closeouts on the perimeter were consistently quick enough to contest shots without conceding easy drives. United shot poorly from beyond the arc, and when they tried to force the ball inside, they met a wall of help defenders.

Offensively, the Timberwolves shared the ball beautifully. Extra passes turned good looks into great ones, and their transition game punished every United miss. United, by contrast, relied too heavily on individual creation and struggled to generate clean looks once the Timberwolves tightened their rotations.

Standout Performers

The Timberwolves' wing players were the difference-makers, combining scoring on the break with disciplined half-court execution. Their starting centre anchored the defence and cleaned up the defensive glass, while the bench guards maintained pressure on United's ball handlers throughout the fourth quarter. For Vienna United, the evening offered few highlights; their effort remained honest, but the execution simply was not at the level required for this derby.

Season Impact

Bragging rights in the Austrian capital belong to Vienna Timberwolves, and the win gives them valuable momentum in the Austria Basketball Zweite Liga table. For Vienna United, the defeat is a stark reminder of the gap they must close if they are to compete with the league's stronger sides. The rematch later in the season will be a significant test of character for both clubs.
