Club Atletico Penarol produced a commanding performance to defeat San Martin 95-76 in the Argentinian Liga Nacional de Básquet, combining efficient offense with a strong second-quarter run that changed the direction of the game. Penarol’s balanced scoring and defensive pressure proved too much for San Martin, who stayed competitive early but could not keep pace after halftime.

Match overview

The game began with both teams trading baskets, but Penarol gradually imposed their rhythm through ball movement and aggressive drives into the lane. San Martin kept the score close in the opening period by hitting outside shots and attacking in transition, but Penarol’s depth and defensive adjustments began to tell in the second quarter.

By the time the teams reached the locker room, Penarol had established a double-digit advantage. They extended it in the third quarter with a series of quick scoring runs and never allowed San Martin to mount a serious comeback. The final 95-76 scoreline reflected Penarol’s control over the second half.

Key moments

• Penarol closed the first quarter with a short burst to take an early edge.
• A 12-2 run in the second period gave the hosts their first significant lead.
• San Martin briefly cut the deficit after halftime, but Penarol answered with back-to-back three-pointers.
• The fourth quarter belonged to Penarol, who controlled the glass and converted turnovers into easy points.

Tactical story

Penarol’s offense was built on quick ball movement and intelligent spacing. Their guards consistently penetrated into the paint, forcing San Martin’s defense to collapse before kicking the ball out to open shooters. When San Martin tried to extend their defense, Penarol attacked the rim with cutters and offensive rebounds.

Defensively, Penarol’s pressure disrupted San Martin’s half-court flow. The visitors struggled to string together consecutive quality possessions, and their turnovers allowed Penarol to play in transition. San Martin’s best moments came when they slowed the game down and attacked the paint, but those stretches were too infrequent to threaten the result.

Standout performers

Penarol’s backcourt led the way with a composed scoring and playmaking performance, finishing with 22 points and seven assists. Their interior presence added 18 points and 10 rebounds, while a wing contributor chipped in with 15 points and several important defensive plays. San Martin’s leading scorer fought hard with 20 points, but support was limited as Penarol’s defense tightened in the second half.

Standings impact

The win strengthens Penarol’s position in the Argentinian Liga Nacional de Básquet and reinforces their home-court advantage. For San Martin, the loss highlights the need for more consistent offense and better ball security against pressure defenses. The result also serves as a reminder of how quickly a game can turn when one team controls the defensive glass and limits second-chance opportunities.

What it means

Penarol’s 95-76 victory was more than a comfortable home win; it was a demonstration of the depth and tactical flexibility that make them a dangerous opponent in the league. San Martin will need to regroup quickly, but there were enough positive spells to suggest they can respond in their next outing.
