Club Atletico River Plate Take 83-74 Road Win Over Union de Mar del Plata in Liga Nacional

Club Atletico River Plate produced a controlled and increasingly confident road performance on Sunday, defeating Union de Mar del Plata 83-74 in Argentina Liga Nacional action. The visitors turned a tight, physical contest into a nine-point win by winning the middle quarters and closing the game with better execution in the final minutes.

The result gives River Plate an important away victory in a competition where road games are rarely comfortable, while Union de Mar del Plata are left to reflect on a home defeat that was shaped by missed opportunities and a costly third-quarter stretch.

Match Overview

Union de Mar del Plata opened with energy in front of their home support, attacking the paint early and using a patient half-court approach to keep the game at their preferred tempo. River Plate stayed close through perimeter shooting and transition chances, then took control before halftime with a more balanced offensive spread.

The final score of 83-74 reflects River Plate’s edge in shooting efficiency and rebounding, but the game was tighter than the final margin for long stretches. Union remained within striking distance into the fourth quarter before River Plate’s defense and free-throw discipline sealed the result.

How the Game Unfolded

The first quarter was a back-and-forth exchange, with Union de Mar del Plata edging ahead 21-20 after ten minutes. Their guards found seams in River Plate’s defense, and the home side did a good job of drawing help defenders before kicking the ball to open shooters.

River Plate responded in the second quarter. Their ball movement improved, and the visitors began to find cleaner looks from beyond the arc. A 22-16 advantage in the period sent River Plate into halftime with a 42-37 lead, a cushion that reflected their growing control of the game.

The third quarter proved decisive. Union briefly threatened to retake momentum, but River Plate answered with a 12-2 run late in the period. That surge pushed the visitors into a 63-55 lead entering the final ten minutes and forced Union to chase the game.

• First quarter: Union de Mar del Plata 21-20, with the home side attacking the paint effectively.
• Second quarter: River Plate outscored Union 22-16 to take a 42-37 halftime lead.
• Third quarter: A late 12-2 run gave River Plate a 63-55 advantage.
• Fourth quarter: Union cut the deficit to four before River Plate closed with timely baskets and free throws.

Tactical Story

River Plate’s half-court defense was the foundation of the win. The visitors switched aggressively on screens, contested Union’s perimeter looks, and limited second-chance points by controlling the defensive glass. That rebounding advantage allowed River Plate to survive Union’s best stretches and keep the home side from building a meaningful run.

Offensively, River Plate leaned on pick-and-roll actions to create mismatches. When Union’s big men stepped out to contain the ball handler, River Plate found cutters and corner shooters. When Union stayed home, the visitors attacked the lane with drives and short pull-up jumpers. That flexibility made River Plate difficult to guard for four quarters.

Union de Mar del Plata’s best moments came when they played inside-out. Their post touches drew help defenders and created open three-point attempts, but the home side’s shooting cooled in the second half. A handful of empty possessions in the third quarter allowed River Plate to build the cushion that ultimately decided the game.

Standout Performers

River Plate’s backcourt set the tone, with Nicolás Ferreyra finishing with 19 points and seven assists. He controlled the pace, made timely shots in the third quarter, and repeatedly found open teammates when Union collapsed into the paint.

Santiago Ibarra added 16 points and nine rebounds from the forward position, giving River Plate a reliable inside-outside presence. Facundo Ríos contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Tomás Bianchi added 12 points off a steady all-around performance. The balance across the rotation was a major difference in the contest.

For Union de Mar del Plata, Marco Villalba led the scoring with 18 points and kept the home side within reach during the second half. Tomás Aguirre added 15 points, and Lautaro Sosa chipped in 12, but Union could not find enough offense late to complete the comeback.
