Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata earned a 73-58 road victory over Centenario de Neuquen in the Argentina Liga Nacional, delivering a disciplined defensive performance and controlling the game through the middle quarters. The final score reflected a low-scoring, physical contest in which La Plata’s patience and shot selection proved superior.

Centenario de Neuquen struggled to find offensive rhythm for long stretches, while Gimnasia steadily built a lead with efficient half-court possessions and timely perimeter shooting. The visitors never allowed the home side to mount a sustained comeback, closing out the game with calm execution in the fourth quarter.

Match overview

The opening quarter was tight and defensive, with both teams forcing contested shots and limiting easy baskets. Centenario’s home crowd tried to inject energy, but Gimnasia’s structured approach kept the game at a pace that suited them. La Plata moved the ball patiently, attacked mismatches inside and knocked down enough outside shots to keep the defense honest.

As the game progressed, Centenario’s offensive problems became more pronounced. The home side found some success on the offensive glass and in transition, but inconsistent shooting prevented them from putting together a meaningful run. Gimnasia took advantage, stretching the lead in the third quarter and protecting it with strong defense down the stretch.

Key moments

• Gimnasia closed the second quarter with a mini-run to take control before halftime.
• Centenario briefly cut the deficit after halftime with a pair of fast-break baskets.
• La Plata responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer, to re-establish a comfortable cushion.
• Gimnasia’s defensive stops in the final five minutes ended any realistic comeback hopes for Centenario.

Tactical story

Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata’s defensive discipline was the foundation of the win. The visitors closed driving lanes, contested jump shots and forced Centenario into late-shot-clock situations. On offense, La Plata used purposeful ball movement to create open looks, and their ability to score in both the paint and from the perimeter made them difficult to guard.

Centenario’s best moments came when they increased the tempo and attacked before Gimnasia’s defense could set. However, those moments were too sporadic. The home side also struggled at the free-throw line and failed to convert several second-chance opportunities, which proved costly in a game where every possession carried extra weight.

Standout performers

Gimnasia’s guards controlled the tempo and made important shots when Centenario threatened to close the gap. The frontcourt provided physical defense and rebounding, helping La Plata win the battle in the paint. Centenario received effort from their interior players, but the team’s perimeter shooting and late-game execution let them down.

League impact

The 73-58 result gives Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata a valuable road win in the Argentina Liga Nacional and reinforces their reputation as a defensively organized side. For Centenario de Neuquen, the loss highlights the need for more consistent scoring and better execution in half-court possessions. In a league known for physical, tactical basketball, La Plata’s control of tempo was the decisive factor.
