USM Blida 59-57 USM Alger — in a fiercely contested, low-scoring Algeria Super Division derby, USM Blida edged city rivals USM Alger by two points, grinding out a defensive win that came down to the final possession.

There was nothing comfortable about this one. Neither team shot the ball well, both defenses dominated the paint, and the game was decided in the closing seconds when Blida's half-court defense forced a difficult, contested look that rimmed out as the buzzer sounded. It was a win built on grit rather than flair, and it was celebrated like a much bigger margin.

Match overview

• Final score: USM Blida 59, USM Alger 57
• Competition: Algeria Super Division
• Quarter scores (Blida–Alger): 14-12, 16-15, 13-16, 16-14

The margin never exceeded five points at any stage. Both coaches rotated heavily, both benches contributed key minutes, and the lead changed hands repeatedly in the fourth quarter before Blida finally secured the decisive basket inside the final minute.

How the game was decided

With the scores tied and under a minute remaining, Blida ran a patient set that ended with a drive and a short floater in the lane, giving the hosts a two-point cushion. USM Alger called timeout to draw up a response, but the Blida defense switched every screen and forced the visitors into a deep, off-balance attempt that missed. The rebound was secured, the clock ran out, and the derby belonged to Blida.

Earlier, the game had followed a similar script throughout. Alger's best spell came in the third quarter, when a 7-0 run briefly put them ahead and quieted the home support. Blida answered with a more physical approach inside, drawing fouls and converting at the line, which kept them within a single possession heading into the final period.

Tactical story

This was a game defined by defense. Both teams packed the paint, dared each other to shoot from the perimeter, and switched aggressively on the ball. The result was a congested, physical contest with very few clean looks — exactly the kind of night where free throws and offensive rebounds decide the outcome.

Blida's edge came on the boards. Their interior players won the battle on the offensive glass, generating second-chance points that proved decisive in a game where every basket was precious. Alger, meanwhile, moved the ball well in spurts but struggled to convert when the defense collapsed, settling for contested jumpers late in the shot clock.

Standout performers

• Blida's interior players: Dominant on the glass at both ends, and reliable from the free-throw line in the closing minutes.
• Blida's lead guard: Calm under pressure, controlling tempo and delivering the game-winning finish.
• Alger's backcourt: The visitors' most consistent scoring source, creating off the dribble when the half-court offense broke down.

What it means

Two points may look modest on paper, but derby wins like this carry real weight in the Algeria Super Division table. Blida gain both a victory and the psychological edge in one of the league's most closely watched fixtures, while reinforcing a defensive identity that will serve them well across a long domestic season.

For USM Alger, the performance was far from a collapse — a two-point road defeat in a hostile environment is a narrow margin — but the missed opportunities in the fourth quarter will sting. Converting late-game possessions more efficiently is the obvious lesson, and it is one they will need to address quickly as the campaign progresses.
