WBIT: The Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament

The Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) is a prominent postseason college basketball tournament in the United States, operated by the NCAA. Established to provide a national platform for women's teams, the WBIT complements the NCAA Division I women's basketball championship by inviting programs that just missed the larger tournament, ensuring more athletes experience meaningful postseason play.

Tournament Format and Selection

The WBIT field consists of 32 teams, selected by the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee. The tournament features a single-elimination bracket, with games hosted at campus sites for the early rounds before moving to neutral venues for the later stages, culminating in a championship game. The selection process considers teams' full-season resumes, including their NET ranking, strength of schedule, and key wins, making the WBIT a highly competitive event from the opening tip-off.

Importance and Impact on Women's College Basketball

The WBIT has quickly become a significant event in the college basketball calendar. It offers teams a coveted opportunity to extend their season, compete for a national trophy, and gain valuable experience for returning players. For programs on the rise, a deep WBIT run can build momentum for the following season and enhance recruiting. The tournament also increases the visibility of women's basketball, providing additional high-stakes games for fans and broadcast partners.
