Melilla Women produced a commanding home performance in the Superliga Women, defeating Haro Rioja Women 3-0 on Sunday night. The hosts controlled the match from start to finish, combining aggressive serving with a well-organized block to secure a straight-sets victory.

Match overview

Melilla Women won the contest 3-0, with set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-23. The first two sets were largely controlled by the home side, while the third brought a stronger response from Haro Rioja Women. Melilla, however, held their nerve in the closing points to complete the sweep and take all three points.

Melilla’s serve and block take control

From the opening set, Melilla put pressure on Haro Rioja’s reception line. Their float serves and targeted deep serves made it difficult for the visitors to run their middle attack, forcing them into more predictable outside sets. That allowed Melilla’s block to set up early and their defence to read the play.

Melilla’s attacking distribution was also effective. The setter kept Haro Rioja’s blockers moving, involving the middles enough to create one-on-one opportunities for the pin hitters. In the first set, Melilla built a comfortable lead midway through and never looked back, closing it out 25-18.

Haro Rioja improve but fall short

Haro Rioja Women improved in the second set, finding more rhythm through their opposite hitter and reducing their error count. They stayed close early, but Melilla’s serving again created a decisive gap in the middle of the set. A run of points from the home side’s block helped them pull away to take it 25-20.

The third set was the most competitive of the night. Haro Rioja led at stages and pushed Melilla deep into the closing points. However, the hosts’ composure in transition and a couple of important defensive plays proved the difference. Melilla edged the set 25-23 to complete the 3-0 win.

Standout performers and tactical story

Melilla’s opposite hitter was a consistent outlet in attack, especially when the team needed a side-out. The middle blockers contributed key blocks and quick points, while the libero anchored the backcourt with steady passing and defence. For Haro Rioja, the outside hitters worked hard against a well-formed block, but the team struggled to find the same efficiency in serve-receive as the match wore on.

• Key strength for Melilla: aggressive serving that disrupted Haro Rioja’s first tempo.
• Key improvement for Haro Rioja: their third-set fight and better attacking balance.
• Turning point: Melilla’s mid-set run in the second set, which broke the visitors’ resistance.

What the result means

The straight-sets win strengthens Melilla Women’s position in the Superliga Women standings and gives them confidence ahead of their next fixture. For Haro Rioja Women, the defeat highlights the importance of sustaining serve-receive quality against strong serving teams. They showed fight in the third set, but Melilla’s control in the key moments proved decisive.
