OrPo Women suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Polkky Kuusamo Women in the Mestaruusliiga Women on Saturday, 17 October 2026, despite making a promising start in front of their own supporters. The visitors responded strongly after losing the opening set and gradually imposed their attacking depth and blocking strength to take all three points.

Match overview

OrPo began with energy and purpose, using the home crowd to fuel a confident first set. The hosts passed well and attacked through the pins with variety, taking the opener 25-22. It was a deserved lead, but it also marked the high point of OrPo’s evening.

Polkky Kuusamo Women regrouped immediately. The visitors increased their serving pressure in the second set and began to disrupt OrPo’s reception, winning 25-20 to level the match. From that point on, the away side looked the more settled team, taking the third set 25-19 and closing out the fourth 25-21.

The final scoreline of 1-3 tells the story of a match that shifted after the opening set. OrPo remained competitive in patches, but Kuusamo’s ability to sustain pressure through longer rallies and their sharper transition play proved decisive.

Key moments

The second set was the critical phase. OrPo stayed close early, but a run of strong serves from Kuusamo forced the hosts into several difficult attacks, and the visitors converted those chances into a lead they protected comfortably. In the third set, OrPo were still within range at 14-14 before Kuusamo pulled away with a block-and-counter sequence that changed the momentum.

The fourth set offered OrPo one last route back into the match. The hosts led 12-9 after a good defensive sequence, but Kuusamo responded with a composed run of their own. A series of clean side-outs and two key blocks in the closing stages ended OrPo’s resistance.

Tactical story

Kuusamo’s adjustment after the first set was central to the result. They targeted OrPo’s reception more aggressively and used their block to slow down the home side’s preferred outside attack. As OrPo’s first contact became less reliable, the setter was forced into more predictable choices, making life easier for Kuusamo’s defenders.

In attack, Kuusamo showed greater balance. Their opposite carried a heavy load in the big moments, but the middle hitters also contributed important kills that kept OrPo’s block honest. OrPo, by contrast, relied heavily on their pin hitters and struggled to find the same attacking variety once the visitors settled into their defensive rhythm.

Standout performers

Kuusamo’s opposite was a consistent outlet throughout the comeback, scoring both in system and out of system. Their setter deserves credit for spreading the attack after a slow opening set, while the libero helped stabilise the back court during the visitors’ best spells. OrPo’s libero was among the hosts’ most reliable performers, and their outside hitter produced several important points in the first set, but the team could not maintain that level.

What it means

The away win is a significant statement for Polkky Kuusamo Women in the Mestaruusliiga Women, showing that they can recover from a set down and control the match on the road. For OrPo Women, the defeat highlights the need for greater consistency after strong starts. The hosts have the attacking tools to compete, but they must improve their serve-receive under pressure if they are to turn promising openings into full-match results.
