Key moments

Poitiers started brightly, using the home crowd and a strong service run to take the opener. Nazaire answered in the second set by improving their first-touch quality and involving the middle attack more often. The third set was the tightest of the night, with Poitiers saving a late deficit before edging ahead. That could have been the turning point, but Nazaire responded impressively in the fourth, forcing a decider with a composed side-out performance.

In the fifth set, Poitiers held a narrow lead at the change of ends, but Nazaire won three of the next four points through a block and two transition kills. A final serve that Poitiers could not control sealed the comeback.

Tactical story

Poitiers’ best volleyball came when their serve disrupted Nazaire’s setter and kept the visitors away from their preferred quick attacks. However, Nazaire adjusted well by using more high balls to the pins and by targeting Poitiers’ outside hitters in serve-receive. The deciding factor was Nazaire’s ability to defend in the back court and convert difficult rallies into points. Poitiers’ block had strong moments, but Nazaire’s attacking variety and patience in long rallies proved more reliable.

Standout players

For Nazaire, Lucas Bernard was a constant threat from the outside, especially in the fourth and fifth sets. Mathis Gourin contributed crucial points from the opposite position, while middle blocker Hugo Delaunay gave the team energy with timely blocks. Poitiers were well served by Antoine Mercier, who carried a heavy attacking load, and setter Julien Rocher, who kept the offense unpredictable for long spells.

Season impact

The five-set win adds valuable points to Nazaire’s Ligue A tally and gives them confidence in close matches. For Poitiers, the loss is a frustrating one because they competed well for long periods, but it highlights the fine margins in the French top flight. Both teams will take clear lessons into their next fixtures, with Nazaire buoyed by their late-game execution and Poitiers focused on closing out tight sets.
