Leixoes SC produced a resilient 3-2 away victory over Alvares in the Campeonato Nacional on 24 October 2026, recovering from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two sets and take a hard-fought result. The visitors triumphed 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 11-15 after a tense fifth set.

Match overview

Alvares started well in front of their home crowd, taking the opening set 25-23 after a tight finish. Their serve was effective, and their block managed to contain Leixoes SC’s outside attack for long enough to build a narrow lead. Leixoes responded in the second set, improving their reception and finding more success through the middle. A 25-21 win levelled the match and settled the visitors into the contest.

The third set was another close battle, with Alvares edging it 25-22 to move 2-1 ahead. At that stage, the home side looked in control, but Leixoes SC refused to fade. They raised their serving intensity in the fourth set, forced Alvares into predictable attacks, and took it 25-20 to force a decider. In the fifth set, Leixoes maintained their composure, winning the key transition points and closing out the match 15-11.

• First set: Alvares won the tight opening exchanges and took the set 25-23.
• Second set: Leixoes improved their first-ball attack and levelled the match with a 25-21 win.
• Third set: Alvares regained the lead with a 25-22 victory, putting them one set from the match.
• Fourth set: Leixoes increased their serve pressure and forced a decider with a 25-20 win.
• Fifth set: The visitors held their nerve in the closing rallies and completed the comeback at 15-11.

Tactical story

The match shifted in the fourth set when Leixoes SC began to serve with more risk. That approach reduced Alvares’ ability to run their middle attack and allowed the visiting block to focus on the wings. Leixoes also improved their transition defence, keeping several difficult balls alive and turning them into counter-attack points. Alvares, who had been efficient in the first and third sets, became more reliant on high outside balls as the match wore on.

In the fifth set, Leixoes’ experience showed. They won the first significant mini-break and managed the scoreboard well, avoiding the kind of unforced errors that had hurt them earlier. Alvares pushed late, but the visitors’ serving and defence held firm.

Standout performers

Leixoes SC’s opposite hitter was central to the comeback, delivering important kills in the fourth and fifth sets. Their libero also had a strong match, stabilising reception and making several crucial defensive plays. For Alvares, the middle blocker was effective in the first three sets, while the home outside hitter produced a number of important points during their best spells.

Standings and season impact

The win gives Leixoes SC a valuable away result in the Campeonato Nacional standings and reinforces their ability to compete in five-set matches. For Alvares, the defeat is a tough one to take after leading 2-1, but the performance showed that they can trouble strong opposition at home.

Leixoes will look to build on the resilience they showed in the closing sets, while Alvares must find a way to close out matches when they hold the advantage. In a competitive Campeonato Nacional season, this kind of head-to-head result could matter when the standings are decided.
