VfB Friedrichshafen recovered from a slow start to beat Haching München 3-1 in the 1. Bundesliga, taking control of the match after dropping the opening set. The visitors' depth and serving power proved decisive as the contest wore on, leaving the Munich side to reflect on a bright beginning that they could not sustain.

Match overview

Haching München came out with real intent, serving aggressively and attacking without hesitation to take the first set. It was exactly the start the home crowd wanted, and for a set it looked as though an upset might be on the cards. Friedrichshafen, however, responded with the composure of a club accustomed to these situations, raising their block and reducing their error count across the next three sets.

Set-by-set

• Set 1 – Haching 25-20: The hosts hit aggressively from the pins and forced Friedrichshafen into uncomfortable receptions.
• Set 2 – Friedrichshafen 25-22: A tighter set decided by a late serving run and two crucial blocks.
• Set 3 – Friedrichshafen 25-20: The visitors' block began to dominate, and the transition game clicked into gear.
• Set 4 – Friedrichshafen 25-18: Friedrichshafen closed with authority, pulling clear midway through the set.

Key moments

At 21-21 in the second set, the match was balanced on a knife edge. Friedrichshafen produced three straight points — a service ace, a block and a counter-attack winner — to take the set and swing the momentum permanently. From that point on, Haching's first-ball side-out became increasingly difficult to find.

Tactical story

Friedrichshafen's serve-receive adjustment after the first set was the foundation of the comeback. With better passing, their setter could involve the middle attack and create genuine variety, opening seams in a Haching block that had been effective early. The visitors also increased their service pressure, targeting the deepest part of the court and forcing Haching's attackers into awkward positions.

Haching's defensive effort remained strong, but their attacking options narrowed as the match progressed. Faced with a well-formed block, they increasingly relied on individual brilliance rather than system play, and Friedrichshafen's floor defence was well organized enough to handle that challenge.

Standout performers

Friedrichshafen's opposite grew into the match and was the dominant scorer across the final two sets. Their middle blockers added a string of blocks in the third set that visibly dented Haching's confidence, and the libero provided stability in reception during the crucial second set. For Haching, the outside hitters impressed in the opener, and their setter showed real creativity before the visitors' pressure took its toll.

Season impact

Friedrichshafen take three points from a potentially awkward away fixture and keep pace near the top of the 1. Bundesliga table. The ability to win after losing the first set is a valuable trait in a long season. Haching, meanwhile, can take encouragement from their opening set but will need to sustain that level for longer periods against the league's strongest sides.
