Gilas Women exit Batam with heads held high after quarterfinal run

Gilas Pilipinas Women fell one win short of reaching the semifinals, but the Filipinas left the 2026 FIBA 3x3 Women's Series–Batam Stop with momentum and valuable ranking points for the road ahead.

The national team bowed to Thailand, 15-11, in the quarterfinals on Friday at Alun-Alun Batam Centre in Indonesia, concluding a spirited campaign that ended with an eighth-place finish.

The result boosted the Philippines to 26th in the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series standings, allowing Gilas Women to move ahead of Manila in the global rankings.

The quarterfinal clash was tightly contested in the opening stages, with the teams deadlocked at 8-8 midway through the game.

Thailand eventually took control behind Rattiyakorn Udomsuk, who scored three straight baskets to swing the momentum. Supavadee Kunchuan followed with a long-range two-pointer that pushed the advantage to 12-8.

Gilas refused to back down.

Mikka Cacho and Elizabeth Means sparked one final rally, but Kunchuan and Warinthon Summat answered with clutch baskets to close out the victory and send Thailand into the semifinals against China.

Cacho led the Filipinas with six points, while Camille Clarin added three. Means and Tantoy Ferrer finished with one point each.

Thailand was powered by Udomsuk's eight-point outing, while Kunchuan knocked down three two-pointers to account for all six of her points.

Although the tournament ended in the quarterfinals, Gilas Women turned in one of its stronger performances on the Women's Series circuit.

The Filipinas battled through the qualifying draw with wins over Vietnam (21-11) and Slovakia (16-15), then recovered from a 21-9 loss to powerhouse France by upsetting Japan, 17-15, to earn a place in the knockout stage.

With confidence gained and ranking points secured, Gilas Pilipinas Women now shifts its focus to the Tokyo stop of the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series, which begins on Aug. 1.
