Match overview

Cardiff City set the tone from the opening whistle, winning the ball high and forcing Cardiff Metropolitan into rushed clearances. The hosts opened the scoring early and, even after the visitors briefly restored parity, never looked like surrendering control. A devastating spell before half-time broke the game open, and the second half became a procession as Cardiff City added further goals against a tiring Metropolitan defence.

The final scoreline of 7-1 reflected not just the quality of Cardiff City's finishing but also the difference in physicality and tempo. Metropolitan had moments on the ball, particularly in the first 20 minutes, but they were unable to cope with the hosts' relentless waves of attack.

Tactical story

Cardiff City's shape was aggressive and fluid. Their midfield pressed in a narrow block, forcing Cardiff Metropolitan to play long, while the full-backs pushed high to create overloads in wide areas. The hosts repeatedly attacked the space behind Metropolitan's defensive line, and their movement in the final third was too sharp to contain.

Cardiff Metropolitan tried to sit deeper after the early exchanges, hoping to frustrate their opponents and hit on the counter. But once Cardiff City scored their third, the visitors' defensive structure became stretched, and the gaps between midfield and defence grew wider with every passing minute. The result was a constant stream of chances and a scoreline that could have been even more emphatic.

Standout players

Cardiff City's central striker led the line brilliantly, scoring a hat-trick and linking play with intelligent hold-up work. The left winger added a brace and was a constant menace with her direct running, while the captain controlled the tempo from midfield, winning second balls and dictating the direction of attack. For Cardiff Metropolitan, the goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score from reaching double figures, and their lone goal scorer showed good composure in an otherwise difficult afternoon.

Welsh Women's Premier League table impact
