The UEFA Intertoto Cup was a summer football competition for European clubs that had not qualified for the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Cup (now Europa League). It served as an additional gateway for teams to enter the UEFA Cup, providing competitive fixtures during the off-season. Unlike other UEFA tournaments, it did not award a champion's trophy in its later format but instead offered several qualification berths into the UEFA Cup.

Unique Structure and Purpose

The Intertoto Cup had a distinctive format, with multiple winners. Clubs entered based on their league positions and applied for participation. The competition was played in knockout rounds during the summer months, culminating in multiple two-legged finals. The winners of these finals, typically three to five clubs depending on the year, would earn a place in the qualifying rounds of that season's UEFA Cup. Historical Context and Demise

Initially founded in the 1960s, the tournament was taken over by UEFA in 1995 and restructured. It helped launch or extend the European campaigns of several well-known clubs.
