Rijeka vs NK Varteks Varazdin: Rijeka Held to 1-1 Draw

Rijeka were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against NK Varteks Varazdin in the Croatian Football League at Stadion Rujevica on Sunday, 1 November 2026. Rijeka dominated long spells of the match and took the lead in the first half, but a determined Varteks side found a late equaliser to claim a hard-earned point.

Match overview

Rijeka controlled possession from the opening minutes, moving the ball patiently and probing for gaps in the Varteks defence. The home side created the better chances and looked likely to add to their lead after going ahead. However, Varteks stayed organised, defended their penalty area with numbers and grew more confident as the match wore on.

The equaliser arrived late and changed the mood inside the stadium. Rijeka pushed forward in search of a winner, but Varteks held firm and protected their point. For Rijeka, it was a frustrating evening; for the visitors, it was a display of resilience and discipline.

Key moments

• 38th minute: Rijeka took the lead through Toni Fruk, who found space on the edge of the box and finished with a precise strike.
• Half-time: Varteks reorganised defensively and began to commit more players to counterattacks.
• 82nd minute: Varteks equalised from a set piece, with a header looping beyond the Rijeka goalkeeper.
• 90th minute: Rijeka’s final push produced one last corner, but Varteks cleared the danger to secure the draw.

Tactical story

Rijeka’s game was built on possession and patient build-up, with their midfield looking to release wide players into space. They created several promising moments but lacked the final touch when the chances arrived. Varteks defended deep and limited space centrally, forcing Rijeka to attack through crosses and long-range shots.

The visitors’ equaliser came from one of their few sustained attacking moments. A well-delivered set piece exposed Rijeka’s marking, and Varteks made the most of the opportunity. Rijeka’s response was energetic but hurried, and the home side could not find a second goal.

Standout players

Fruk was Rijeka’s most dangerous player, linking midfield and attack and scoring the opening goal. Rijeka’s goalkeeper had little to do for long periods but could not keep out the late set piece. For Varteks, the goalkeeper and centre-backs deserved credit for withstanding pressure, while the set-piece delivery proved decisive.

Croatian Football League impact

The draw leaves Rijeka with mixed emotions: they extended their unbeaten run but dropped points in a match they largely controlled. Varteks will view the result as a valuable away point against one of the league’s stronger sides. In a competitive Croatian Football League campaign, such results can matter greatly by the end of the season.
