Maharlika 2-2 Aguilas-UMak FC: Late Equaliser Denies Visitors in Four-Goal Philippines United Football League Thriller

Maharlika and Aguilas-UMak FC shared the spoils in a pulsating 2-2 draw in the Philippines United Football League on 18 October 2026. A late equaliser from substitute Joshua Abad rescued a point for Maharlika after Aguilas-UMak had twice threatened to take all three points in an end-to-end contest.

The draw reflected the balance of play: Maharlika enjoyed more possession and created the clearer chances in open play, while Aguilas-UMak were dangerous on the counterattack and from set pieces. Both teams remain firmly in the mix for the league’s playoff places, but both will feel they left opportunities on the pitch.

Match Overview

Maharlika started brightly and took the lead in the 17th minute when Mark Villanueva finished a flowing move down the left. The hosts pressed for a second, but Aguilas-UMak gradually grew into the game and equalised six minutes before half-time through Jomar Dela Cruz, who converted from close range after a quick counter.

The visitors then took the lead in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot, with Rafael Soriano sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Maharlika pushed more bodies forward in the final 20 minutes and were rewarded in the 86th minute when Abad arrived at the back post to turn in a low cross.

Key Moments

• 17’ – Maharlika 1-0: Mark Villanueva side-footed home after a neat exchange on the edge of the box.
• 39’ – Aguilas-UMak 1-1: Jomar Dela Cruz levelled with a composed finish following a rapid transition.
• 63’ – Aguilas-UMak 2-1: Rafael Soriano converted a penalty after a handball appeal was upheld.
• 86’ – Maharlika 2-2: Joshua Abad scored from close range to cap a period of sustained pressure.

Tactical Story

Maharlika built their game around patient possession and wide overloads, with their full-backs pushing high to support the attack. Villanueva’s movement between the lines caused problems early on, and the hosts’ midfield trio worked hard to recycle the ball quickly. However, their eagerness to commit numbers forward left space behind for Aguilas-UMak’s counterattacks.

Aguilas-UMak sat deeper after taking the lead and looked to spring forward through Soriano and Dela Cruz. Their compact defensive shape frustrated Maharlika for long spells, but the introduction of fresh legs from the bench gave the home side renewed energy in the final quarter. The late equaliser came from exactly the kind of wide delivery Maharlika had been threatening throughout the second half.

Standout Players

Mark Villanueva was Maharlika’s most influential attacking player, linking play and opening the scoring. Joshua Abad made the decisive impact from the bench, while Rafael Soriano was Aguilas-UMak’s standout performer, combining penalty-box threat with intelligent hold-up play. Both goalkeepers made important saves in a match that could easily have produced more goals.

Season Impact

The point keeps both clubs in the hunt for a strong finish in the Philippines United Football League standings. Maharlika will take encouragement from their late response and attacking output, but they must tighten up defensively after conceding twice at home. Aguilas-UMak will be frustrated to drop points so late, yet their away performance showed plenty of resilience and tactical discipline. The return fixture now looks like an appealing head-to-head for neutral supporters.
