Club America 1-1 Club Tijuana: Hosts Held in Liga MX Apertura Battle

Club America and Club Tijuana played out a competitive 1-1 draw in their Liga MX Apertura 2026 encounter at the Estadio Azteca, with both sides taking a point from a match that swung between controlled possession and dangerous counter-attacking. Alejandro Zendejas gave Club America a first-half lead, but Raúl Zúñiga responded for Tijuana after the break to earn the visitors a valuable away result.

The draw leaves Club America frustrated after enjoying the better of the ball and creating the clearer chances, while Tijuana will view the performance as evidence of their growing resilience on the road. In a league where every point matters in the race for playoff positions, the result carries weight for both clubs in the Liga MX standings.

Match Overview

Club America started with intent, pressing high and forcing Tijuana into early defensive work. The hosts dominated possession in the opening half-hour, moving the ball quickly through midfield and looking to isolate their wide attackers against Tijuana’s full-backs. That pressure produced the breakthrough when Zendejas arrived in the penalty area to finish a well-worked move involving Kevin Álvarez on the right.

Tijuana grew into the game after conceding, tightening their defensive shape and using direct runs to relieve pressure. The equalizer came from a set piece, with Zúñiga rising highest to meet a delivery and guide a header past Luis Malagón. From there, the match opened up, but neither side could find a winning goal despite late pressure from Club America.

Key Moments

• 28th minute: Club America take the lead through Alejandro Zendejas, who finishes calmly after a flowing move down the right flank.
• 41st minute: Tijuana threaten on the counter, but Malagón stands firm to deny a low effort from the edge of the box.
• 67th minute: Raúl Zúñiga equalizes for Tijuana with a powerful header from a corner-kick situation.
• 79th minute: Club America appeal for a penalty after a challenge inside the area, but the referee waves play on.
• 88th minute: Henry Martín heads narrowly wide as the hosts push for a late winner.

Tactical Story

Club America’s 4-2-3-1 shape gave them control in midfield, with the double pivot allowing the full-backs to push forward and create overloads. Zendejas drifted inside effectively, while Álvarez provided width on the right. The hosts’ main problem was converting territorial dominance into clear chances, especially after Tijuana dropped deeper following the equalizer.

Tijuana set up in a compact 4-4-2 defensive block and looked to strike through transitions. Their midfield worked hard to close central spaces, and the front two combined well to hold up play when Tijuana needed to relieve pressure. The visitors conceded possession for long stretches but defended their box well and were dangerous from set pieces, which ultimately produced their goal.

Standout Performers

Zendejas was Club America’s most inventive attacker, combining close control with intelligent movement between the lines. Álvarez’s energy on the right was also important, while Malagón made a couple of key saves to prevent Tijuana from taking the lead during their strongest spell.

For Tijuana, Zúñiga’s equalizer capped a strong all-round performance, with his hold-up play and aerial presence giving the visitors an outlet. The center-back pairing also deserved credit for surviving long periods of pressure, and the goalkeeper handled crosses well in a loud away environment.

What the Result Means

Club America drop two points in the Apertura race and will be eager to rediscover their finishing touch in the next fixture. The draw keeps them in the playoff conversation, but in a competitive Liga MX table, home matches against mid-table opponents are often viewed as must-win opportunities.

Tijuana, meanwhile, leave with a point that could prove valuable in the aggregate standings. An away draw against one of Mexico’s biggest clubs reinforces their ability to compete in hostile venues. Both teams now turn their attention to the next round, with Club America seeking a sharper attacking display and Tijuana looking to build on a disciplined defensive effort.
