Venados FC Yucatán and Alacranes de Durango played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Mexico Ascenso MX at the Estadio Carlos Iturralde on 25 October 2026, with the visitors twice recovering to deny the hosts a home victory. The point keeps both sides in the thick of the promotion conversation, but it was a result that left Venados frustrated after they had controlled long spells of the match.

Match overview

Venados started brightly and used the width of the pitch to stretch Durango’s defensive block. The hosts moved the ball quickly through midfield and created the first clear chance of the game inside the opening quarter of an hour. Their early pressure was rewarded when Luis Sandoval finished calmly after a flowing move down the left.

Durango responded well, pressing higher and forcing Venados into mistakes at the back. The equaliser arrived before half-time through José Gurrola, whose low drive from the edge of the box found the bottom corner. The second half was more open, with both teams trading chances and the momentum swinging repeatedly.

Key moments

• 12th minute: Luis Sandoval opened the scoring for Venados with a composed finish after a smart cut-back from the left flank.
• 31st minute: José Gurrola equalised for Alacranes de Durango with a low strike from distance that beat the goalkeeper at the near post.
• 54th minute: Daniel Delgadillo put Durango ahead, converting a rebound after Venados failed to clear a corner.
• 88th minute: Mauro Pérez rescued a point for Venados, heading home a deep cross at the back post to make it 2-2.

Tactical story

Venados built their game around possession and patient build-up, often using their full-backs to create overloads in wide areas. That approach worked well in the first half, but it also left them exposed to Durango’s quick counter-attacks. Durango sat deeper after taking the lead and looked to protect their advantage, but they were eventually undone by Venados’ persistence and delivery from wide positions.

The hosts finished with more possession and more shots, but Durango’s efficiency in front of goal kept them in the contest. Set pieces proved decisive at both ends, with Venados’ late equaliser coming from exactly the kind of wide delivery they had threatened throughout the second half.

Standout performers

Sandoval was a constant threat for Venados, linking play and finding space between the lines. Pérez’s late header underlined his importance in the box, while Venados’ goalkeeper made two key saves to prevent Durango from extending their lead. For Alacranes, Gurrola’s energy and Delgadillo’s finishing were the standout features of a resilient away performance.

Season impact

The draw leaves both teams with work to do in the Mexico Ascenso MX table, though neither will feel their promotion hopes have been seriously damaged. Venados will be pleased with the character shown to equalise late, but the dropped points at home could prove costly in a tightly packed race. Durango, meanwhile, will take confidence from earning a point on the road against one of the division’s more ambitious sides.
