Académico de Viseu came from behind to beat Estoril 2-1 in a Portuguese Primera Liga clash at the Estádio do Fontelo, delivering one of their most satisfying results of the campaign in front of their home supporters. The comeback victory was built on a strong second-half display and gives Viseu valuable momentum in the upper half of the table.

Match Overview

Estoril started the brighter of the two teams, controlling possession in midfield and looking dangerous whenever they managed to get their wide players isolated one-on-one. Their reward arrived in the first half, when a well-worked attacking sequence opened up the Viseu defence and gave the visitors a deserved lead.

Viseu's response was measured rather than frantic. Rather than chasing the game immediately, they tightened up defensively, slowed Estoril's rhythm and gradually began to find space between the lines. By the interval the home side were already looking the more likely team to score next.

Key Moments

• Estoril take the lead: A sharp move down the right ended with a clean finish inside the area, silencing the Fontelo crowd early on.
• The equaliser: Viseu levelled shortly after the restart, capitalising on a loose ball in the box and converting from close range to swing the momentum.
• The winner: With the game stretched and both sides committing players forward, Viseu struck the decisive blow, finishing off a rapid counter-attack to make it 2-1.
• Late resistance: Estoril pushed hard for an equaliser, forcing two saves and a goalmouth scramble in the final minutes, but Viseu's back line held firm.

Tactical Story

The match was a classic contest between Estoril's patient possession game and Viseu's disciplined, transition-focused approach. Estoril dominated the ball for long spells but struggled to turn that control into clear chances once Viseu dropped into a compact mid-block and closed the central corridors.

Viseu's manager made the decisive adjustment at half-time, pushing the wing-backs higher and instructing his midfield to press the first pass out of Estoril's defence. That change forced turnovers in dangerous areas and directly contributed to both goals.

Standout Players

Viseu's second-half substitute made an immediate impact, adding energy and directness to the attack and playing a role in the winning goal. In midfield, the captain delivered a captain's performance, covering ground relentlessly and keeping the team organised even after falling behind.

For Estoril, the wide attacker who scored the opener was their most threatening player throughout, while their goalkeeper made several sharp saves to keep the deficit to a single goal.

What It Means for the Season

Three points at home against a quality opponent is exactly the kind of result that shapes a season. Viseu climb the Primera Liga standings and take real confidence into their next fixtures, particularly with their home form beginning to look like a genuine weapon.

Estoril, meanwhile, will be frustrated at letting a lead slip on the road. Their football has been attractive, but converting possession into points away from home remains the key challenge for the weeks ahead.

Final score: Viseu 2-1 Estoril.
