Benfica maintained their title challenge with a comfortable 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes in the Portuguese Primera Liga at the Estádio da Luz on October 12, 2026. The victory keeps Benfica at the top of the standings, while Guimaraes missed a chance to close the gap on the European places.

Match Overview

Benfica controlled the game from the start, dominating possession and creating chances. The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute when Petar Musa finished off a slick team move. Guimaraes struggled to get a foothold, and Benfica doubled their lead just after the hour mark through João Neves' stunning strike from outside the box. The visitors rarely threatened, and Benfica managed the game professionally to secure all three points.

Key Moments

• 34' – 1-0: Petar Musa slots home after a clever through ball from Rafa Silva.
• 61' – 2-0: João Neves unleashes a powerful shot into the top corner.

Tactical Story

Benfica set up in a 4-2-3-1, with their full-backs pushing high and the midfield trio dictating play. Guimaraes tried to press but were often bypassed by Benfica's quick passing. The home side's movement off the ball was exceptional, creating space for Musa and Neves. Guimaraes' manager switched to a back five in the second half, but it only invited more pressure. Benfica's defensive solidity meant goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin had little to do.

Standout Players

Petar Musa was a constant threat, his hold-up play and finishing exceptional. João Neves ran the midfield and scored a goal worthy of winning any match. For Guimaraes, goalkeeper Bruno Varela made several saves to keep the score down, but his teammates struggled to create clear chances.

Season Impact

Benfica remain top of the Primeira Liga standings, two points clear of their nearest rivals. Vitoria Guimaraes stay in fifth, still in contention for a European spot but unable to close the gap. The head-to-head record continues to favor Benfica, who have now won their last four meetings against Guimaraes at home. With the season entering a crucial phase, Benfica look like serious title contenders.
