Panionios G.S.S. left it late but secured a valuable 1-0 win over A.P.S. Zakynthos in the Greek Super League 2 on Sunday evening. A second-half header from central defender Nikos Vlachos was enough to break the deadlock in a match that was often scrappy but never short of commitment.

First Half: Tight and Tactical

The first half was a cagey affair, with Panionios enjoying the lion's share of possession but struggling to find a way through a well-organised Zakynthos defence. The visitors sat deep, looking to hit on the counter-attack, and they nearly took the lead in the 22nd minute when a swift break ended with a shot that clipped the outside of the post.

Panionios's best chance of the opening period fell to Christos Tasoulis, whose powerful drive from 25 yards was tipped over the bar by the Zakynthos goalkeeper. Despite their dominance, the home side went into the break level, with the away side's defensive discipline frustrating them.

Second Half: The Decisive Moment

Panionios continued to probe after the interval, and their persistence finally paid off in the 63rd minute. A well-delivered corner from the right was met by Nikos Vlachos, who rose highest and powered a header into the bottom corner. The Nea Smyrni crowd erupted, and Panionios had the breakthrough they deserved.

Zakynthos responded by pushing men forward, but Panionios's defence held firm. The visitors' best chance to equalise came in the 81st minute when a free-kick was headed narrowly over. In the end, Panionios managed the game professionally to claim all three points.

Key Players

• Nikos Vlachos (Panionios): Scored the winner and was commanding at the back.
• Christos Tasoulis (Panionios): Creative force in midfield, always looking to unlock the defence.
• Zakynthos goalkeeper: Made several important saves to keep his team in the game.

Season Impact

The win lifts Panionios into a promising position in the Greek Super League 2 table, keeping them in touch with the promotion places. For A.P.S. Zakynthos, it is a narrow defeat that highlights their defensive resilience but also their need for more cutting edge in attack. Both teams will look to improve in their next outings.
