Colchester United 0-0 Exeter City — Colchester United and Exeter City played out a goalless League Two draw at the JobServe Community Stadium on 17 October 2026, in a match where both defences came out on top.

Match overview

There was plenty of effort and no shortage of tension, but clear chances were rare. Colchester tried to build patiently from the back, while Exeter looked to press and counter through the wide areas. The visitors had the better spell before half-time, but Colchester’s goalkeeper made two important saves to keep the scores level. After the break, the game became more stretched, yet neither side could find the breakthrough.

Key moments

• 22nd minute: Colchester’s goalkeeper produced a strong save to deny Exeter’s forward from a tight angle.
• 48th minute: Exeter had the ball in the net from a header, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
• 70th minute: Colchester hit the crossbar with a powerful strike from outside the box.
• 84th minute: Exeter’s best chance of the second half ended with a low drive that was smothered at the near post.
• 90th minute: A late Colchester corner caused a scramble, but Exeter cleared the danger.

Tactical story

Both teams set up with compact defensive blocks and looked to force mistakes rather than overcommit. Colchester tried to use the width of their full-backs to stretch Exeter’s midfield, while Exeter relied on quick transitions and set pieces. The midfield battle was intense but cautious, with neither side willing to leave large gaps. As a result, the match became a test of patience, and the defences held firm.

Standout performers

Colchester’s goalkeeper was central to the clean sheet, making key saves at important moments. Their centre-backs also dealt well with Exeter’s aerial threat, while Jack Payne offered energy in midfield. For Exeter, Pierce Sweeney organised the back line well, and the midfield protected the defence effectively during Colchester’s best spells.

Table and season impact

A point apiece may feel more valuable to Exeter, who showed resilience on the road, but Colchester will take encouragement from another clean sheet. In a tightly packed League Two table, draws can be important, though both teams will know that converting promising spells into goals is the next step. The result leaves both sides with clear areas to improve before their next fixtures.
