AE Prat will face CF San Rafael in the first round of the Copa del Rey on 4 October 2026, a knockout tie that brings together a well-established Catalonian club and a determined side from Ibiza in a single-match shootout for a place in the next round of Spain's premier cup competition.

Match Overview

The first round of the Copa del Rey is all about opportunity. Clubs from the regional and lower national tiers are drawn together, the lower-ranked side hosts, and everything is settled in one match. There is no room for a slow start, no chance to recover from a bad night, and no second leg to fall back on.

AE Prat, based in El Prat de Llobregat on the outskirts of Barcelona, go into the tie with home advantage and the benefit of a squad used to competing in Catalonia's demanding football environment. CF San Rafael travel from Ibiza, carrying the ambition of a club that has earned its place in the national knockout draw.

The Format and the Stakes

Every tie in this round is decided on the day, with extra time and penalties available if the scores are level after 90 minutes. Winners move into the second round, and as the competition progresses, clubs from Spain's professional divisions enter — raising the possibility of a dream draw against LaLiga opposition for whoever survives the early rounds.

For clubs at this level, that financial and sporting incentive is enormous. A cup run can fund a season, energise a supporter base and give players a platform to be noticed.

AE Prat: The Catalonian Hosts

Prat are a club with a strong local identity and a reputation for developing players and competing above their weight. Playing at home in a cup tie is a real advantage: the pitch is familiar, the crowd is partisan, and there is no travel to manage. Their game is likely to be built on intensity, disciplined defending and quick attacking transitions.

Their most valuable asset in knockout football is organisation. Teams that stay compact, defend their box well and take their chances from set pieces win far more cup ties than their possession statistics would suggest.

CF San Rafael: The Island Visitors

San Rafael represent Ibiza and the Balearic football scene, a region that has produced plenty of competitive sides capable of causing upsets on the mainland. The trip to Catalonia brings logistical demands, but it also brings freedom: as the travelling side, expectation sits lighter on their shoulders.

Their best route into the match is to keep the ball, slow the tempo and deny Prat the momentum that a home crowd can generate. If they can reach the closing stages level, the psychological advantage may shift their way.

Key Battles to Watch

• Home intensity vs. away control: Who imposes their rhythm first?
• Set pieces: Often decisive in tight cup ties where clear chances are scarce.
• Managing the occasion: First-round cup matches bring nerves, and mistakes are punished.
• The bench: With extra time a possibility, squad depth matters.

Head-to-Head and Context

The two clubs have little recent history of meeting, which adds an element of unpredictability. Neither side will have detailed familiarity with the other's patterns, so early-game adaptation will be crucial. Cup ties between teams from different regions frequently turn on which side settles faster.

What Happens Next

The winner advances to the second round, where the calibre of opposition rises and the possibility of a headline-grabbing draw emerges. For Prat, progression would be a strong statement about the depth of Catalonian football; for San Rafael, it would be a proud moment for the island game.

Expect a cautious, competitive opening, a tight scoreline and a match that could easily be settled by a single moment of quality — or by nerves from twelve yards.
