Kenya U20 1-1 South Sudan U20: CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations Qualification Ends All Square

Kenya U20 and South Sudan U20 shared the points in a competitive CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations qualification fixture on Saturday, 19 September 2026. The evening kick-off ended 1-1, with both teams showing enough promise to suggest they can remain in the hunt for a place at the continental youth finals.

Match Overview

Played under the lights, the match pitted Kenya’s energetic, high-pressing style against South Sudan’s compact and counter-attacking approach. Kenya enjoyed the better of the early possession, moving the ball quickly through midfield and looking to stretch South Sudan’s back line with runs from wide areas. South Sudan, however, defended with discipline and grew more confident as the first half wore on.

The opening goal arrived midway through the first period. Kenya’s pressure finally told when a quick turnover in midfield released their centre-forward, who kept his composure to finish low into the corner. It was a goal that reflected Kenya’s intent, but it also woke South Sudan up. The visitors began to press higher after the restart and were rewarded with an equaliser in the second half.

Key Moments

• 14th minute: Kenya’s first clear chance, a curling effort from the edge of the box, drifted just wide.
• 34th minute: Kenya took the lead after a swift counter-attack, finishing calmly past the South Sudan goalkeeper.
• 49th minute: South Sudan forced a fine save from Kenya’s goalkeeper with a dipping free-kick.
• 72nd minute: South Sudan equalised, pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area and firing home from close range.
• 88th minute: Kenya nearly won it late, but a goal-bound header was cleared off the line.

Tactical Story

Kenya set up in a flexible 4-3-3, using their full-backs high to pin South Sudan back. The approach worked well in the first half, but it also left space behind for South Sudan to exploit after the break. South Sudan switched to a more direct 4-4-2 in the second half, targeting the channels and asking Kenya’s centre-backs to defend while facing their own goal.

The equaliser changed the mood. Kenya pushed more numbers forward in search of a winner, while South Sudan dropped deeper and looked to spring counter-attacks. In the end, both defences held firm during a tense closing spell.

Standout Performers

Kenya’s captain in midfield was central to their best work, winning second balls and linking defence with attack. Their goalkeeper also made two important saves to keep the score level. For South Sudan, the wide players caused problems with their direct running, and the goalkeeper produced a strong overall display despite being beaten once.

What the Result Means

The draw keeps both teams in the qualification conversation, though neither will feel entirely satisfied. Kenya will rue missed chances and a failure to protect their lead, while South Sudan will take confidence from a disciplined away performance and a well-taken equaliser. In the tightly contested CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, every point matters, and this 1-1 result could prove valuable by the time the group reaches its decisive stages.
