Avaí FC and Athletic Club played out a 0-0 draw in the Brazilian Serie B on October 19, 2026, a result that underlined the defensive resolve of both sides but left them with mixed feelings at the Estádio da Ressacada.

Avaí, playing at home in Florianópolis, controlled long spells of the contest and asked most of the attacking questions. Athletic Club, however, defended with discipline and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward. In a match short on goals but not on effort, both goalkeepers produced important saves to keep the scoreline level.

Avaí vs Athletic Club: match overview

• Competition: Brazilian Serie B
• Result: Avaí FC 0-0 Athletic Club
• Venue: Estádio da Ressacada, Florianópolis
• Key theme: Strong defending and missed chances

Key moments in a goalless draw

The first half followed a familiar pattern for Avaí at home: the hosts circulated the ball patiently, pushed their full-backs high and tried to create space around the edge of the penalty area. Athletic Club sat compactly in a mid-to-low block, forcing Avaí into crosses and shots from distance. The visitors’ goalkeeper was called into action more than once, but he dealt comfortably with the attempts that reached him.

After the interval, Avaí increased the tempo. A series of corners and wide deliveries caused brief panic in the Athletic box, yet the final touch was missing. Athletic Club nearly stole the points on the counter, with one breakaway ending in a low shot that forced a sharp save at the near post. In the closing minutes, Avaí threw more bodies forward, but Athletic’s centre-backs held their ground and cleared every dangerous ball.

Tactical story: possession without penetration

Avaí’s approach was built on control. The home side wanted to dictate the rhythm, keep Athletic Club pinned back and create chances through sustained pressure. That plan worked in terms of territory, but it did not produce a clear breakthrough. Athletic Club defended narrowly, protected the central corridor and invited Avaí to play around them rather than through them.

Athletic Club’s performance was a classic away display in a difficult Serie B fixture. They absorbed pressure, stayed patient and looked to spring forward through quick transitions. The visitors did not create many chances, but their willingness to counter kept Avaí from committing everyone forward. The tactical battle was ultimately a draw within a draw: Avaí had the ball, Athletic had the shape.

Standout performers

Both goalkeepers deserve credit for the clean sheets. Avaí’s goalkeeper handled crosses well and made one important second-half stop, while Athletic Club’s shot-stopper was calm under pressure and commanded his area during the host’s best spells. The two central-defensive units also stood out, particularly Athletic Club’s back line, which dealt with a steady stream of balls into the box.

In midfield, Avaí’s captain tried to drive the team forward and was involved in most of their better moments. For Athletic Club, the holding midfielder produced a tireless display, breaking up play and starting counters. Those individual efforts helped turn a potentially open game into a tight, tactical stalemate.

What the point means in the Serie B standings

The draw gives Avaí another home point, but it will feel like two dropped in their push for a stronger position in the Brazilian Serie B table. Athletic Club, meanwhile, will view the clean sheet and away point as a useful result in a long, demanding campaign. In a division where away form often decides promotion and relegation battles, grinding out a 0-0 at a venue like the Ressacada has value.

For Avaí, the challenge is clear: turning territorial control into goals. For Athletic Club, the priority will be building on a disciplined defensive performance. Both sides remain involved in the wider Serie B story, and this goalless draw adds another small but important chapter to their seasons.
