Sporting Hasselt 1-2 Cercle Brugge: Pro League side survive Belgian Cup scare

Cercle Brugge avoided a major Belgian Cup upset by the narrowest of margins, edging past Sporting Hasselt 2-1 in a tense and fiercely contested cup tie. The Pro League side were pushed all the way by their lower-division hosts, who produced a spirited performance that had the home crowd believing in a shock right up until the final whistle.

Sporting Hasselt, playing with freedom and intensity, took the game to their more illustrious opponents and were rewarded with a goal that briefly levelled the contest. But Cercle Brugge’s superior quality in the final third ultimately told, as they scored twice to book their place in the next round of the Belgian Cup.

Match overview

The early exchanges were frantic, with Sporting Hasselt pressing high and refusing to show Cercle Brugge too much respect. The visitors, perhaps expecting a more straightforward evening, took time to find their rhythm. Their first meaningful attack came after 15 minutes, and it produced the opening goal — a well-placed shot from inside the box after a clever exchange on the edge of the area.

Rather than folding, Sporting Hasselt responded with energy. They equalised midway through the first half when a hopeful ball into the box was only half-cleared, and their striker lashed it home from close range. The stadium erupted, and for the next twenty minutes, the underdogs looked the more likely side to score again.

Cercle Brugge regained control after the break, using their superior fitness and technical ability to pin Sporting Hasselt back. The winning goal arrived just past the hour mark, a composed finish following a slick passing move that cut through the home defence. From there, Cercle managed the game professionally, though they were forced into a few nervous defensive clearances late on.

Tactical story

Sporting Hasselt set up with a deep defensive block and looked to hit Cercle Brugge on the counter-attack. Their plan worked well in the first half, as they crowded the midfield and forced the visitors into wide areas where crosses were easily defended. The equaliser came from a set-piece, a reminder of their physical threat.

Cercle Brugge’s manager made tactical adjustments at half-time, pushing the full-backs higher and introducing an extra midfielder to control possession. That change allowed them to dominate the second half. Their winning goal came from a central overload, with a clever pass splitting the defence. Defensively, Cercle were far from perfect, but they showed the composure needed to see out a tricky cup tie.

Standout players

Cercle Brugge’s attacking midfielder: The creative hub of the team, he provided the assist for the opening goal and dictated play in the second half. His movement between the lines was difficult for Sporting Hasselt to contain.

Cercle Brugge’s striker: Scored the winning goal with a clinical finish and worked tirelessly to press the opposition defence. He was a constant outlet when his team needed to relieve pressure.

Sporting Hasselt’s goalkeeper: Despite the defeat, he produced several fine saves to keep the scoreline close, including a one-on-one stop in the first half that kept his side in the game.

Sporting Hasselt’s captain: Led by example in midfield, winning tackles and driving his team forward. His energy epitomised the underdogs’ battling display.

Belgian Cup implications

For Cercle Brugge, the priority was simply to progress, and they achieved that. However, the performance raised questions about their ability to handle physical, lower-league opposition. They will need to be more ruthless in the next round, where the standard of opposition will likely be higher. A cup run remains a realistic target, but they cannot afford many more scares like this.

For Sporting Hasselt, there is no shame in defeat. They pushed a Pro League side to the limit and gave their supporters a memorable night. The experience of competing against top-flight opposition will serve them well in their own league campaign, where they will hope to build on this spirited showing.
