Velez Sarsfield 1-0 Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza — Velez Sarsfield secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza in the Argentine Division 1 on October 18, 2026. Lautaro Ríos scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute at the Estadio José Amalfitani, breaking a stubborn defensive resistance and keeping Velez in the thick of the title race.

Match overview

Velez dominated possession from the opening whistle, moving the ball patiently across the pitch and looking for gaps in a deep, organised Gimnasia block. The visitors defended in numbers, limiting clear chances and trying to threaten on the counter. For long spells it looked as though the home side might be held, but their persistence and a moment of quality from Ríos finally made the breakthrough.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Velez’s first clear opening fell to Santiago Molina, whose header was saved by the Gimnasia goalkeeper.
• 34th minute: Gimnasia produced a rare counterattack, but Velez goalkeeper Emiliano Gómez stood firm to deny a low effort.
• 67th minute: Lautaro Ríos broke the deadlock with a first-time finish from the edge of the box after a neat lay-off.
• 84th minute: Gómez made a crucial late save to preserve the lead as Gimnasia pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Tactical story

Velez’s approach was built on control and patience. Their midfield circulated the ball well and kept Gimnasia pinned back, while the full-backs provided width in the final third. Gimnasia’s defensive discipline was impressive for much of the game, but their inability to keep possession under pressure meant they were eventually forced deeper and deeper. The decisive goal came from exactly the kind of quick combination play Velez had been attempting all afternoon.

Standout players

Ríos deserves the headlines for his match-winning strike, but Velez’s goalkeeper Emiliano Gómez was equally important, producing two key saves in the second half. For Gimnasia, centre-back Facundo Sosa was a standout in defeat, winning several important duels and organising the back line under sustained pressure.

Season impact

The three points keep Velez Sarsfield firmly in the Argentine Division 1 standings conversation, maintaining their pursuit of the top places. Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza remain without a result at the Estadio José Amalfitani and will take encouragement from their defensive effort, even as they rue a missed opportunity to claim an away point. The result reinforces Velez’s reputation as one of the league’s most controlled home teams.
